History of The Horcruxes

What is a Horcrux?

A horcrux is a dark object from the Harry Potter series that contains a piece of a person’s soul. To create a horcrux a person needs to perform a ritual that involves killing someone to split off a piece of their own soul. With parts of their soul hidden they maintain an anchor to the mortal world and cannot be killed.

In the Harry Potter books, Lord Voldemort creates multiple horcruxes with the intention of achieving immortality. Once created a horcrux is difficult to destroy, but their is always a way…

What are the Seven Horcurxes?

Seven Horcruxes in the order Voldemort created them:

  1. Tom Riddle's diary

  2. Marvolo Gaunt's ring

  3. Salazar Slytherin's locket

  4. Helga Hufflepuff's cup

  5. Rowena Ravenclaw's diadem

  6. Nagini

  7. Harry Potter (unknowingly, Voldemort accidentally made baby Harry a Horcrux when he tried to kill him)

How was Each Horcrux Made and Who did Lord Voldemort Kill to Make Each Horcrux?

  1. Tom Riddle's diary - Voldemort created the first Horcrux as a student at Hogwarts. He murdered a muggle-born witch, Myrtle Warren, using the Basilisk from the Chamber of Secrets.

  2. Marvolo Gaunt's ring - Voldemort stole the ring containing the resurrection stone from his uncle, Morfin Gaunt. He then murdered his muggle grandparents and his father, Tom Riddle Sr., to turn the ring into a Horcurx.

  3. Helga Hufflepuff's cup - Voldemort stole Hufflepuff’s cup as well as Salazar Slytherin’s locket from Hepzibah Smith, a wealthy witch and avid collector of antiquities. He murdered Hepzibah to turn the cup into a Horcrux.

  4. Salazar Slytherin's locket - Voldemort also stole the locket from Hepzibah Smith. He murdered an unknown muggle tramp to turn the locket into a Horcrux.

  5. Rowena Ravenclaw's diadem - Voldemort traveled to Albania to retrieve the diadem and murdered an Albanian peasant to turn it into a Horcrux.

  6. Nagini - Voldemort turned his beloved pet snake into a Horcrux by killing Ministry of Magic employee, Bertha Jorkins, after she was tortured in an Albanian forest for information of the Triwizard Tournament.

  7. Harry Potter - Voldemort killed Harry’s parents, Lily and James Potter. In an attempt to murder Harry, he inadvertently made Harry a Horcrux when a piece of his soul broke off and attached itself to Harry.
